2025 Astrophotography Winners

Yearly imaging awards are given out to RASC Calgary members in the categories of, Deep Sky, Solar System, Wide Field, Light Pollution, Video, Open and Best Overall. Look for your opportunity to submit an entry in late fall to be announced at our yearly awards banquet.

Best Overall & Deep Sky

Images taken through telescopes of galaxies, nebulae, globular clusters, etc.

Winner : Eric Klaszus – IC1396 Elephants Trunk Nebula

Open Category

This category was created for more experienced imagers to enter any image  and encourage new imagers to contribute to the other categories

Solar System

Images of the Sun, Moon, planets, comets, etc.

Winner : Eric Klaszus – Comet C.2025 A6 Lemmon

Wide Field

Images of very wide fields of sky (e.g., Milky Way, aurora, constellations, etc.)

Winner : Matthew Earl – A stargazer in paradise

Light Pollution

Images showing examples of good or bad lighting practices

Winner : Brian Zurek – Light Pollution Calgary glow over Lower Kananaskis Lake

Sketch

A drawing made at the eyepiece

Winner : Wade Williamson – M31 from SeeStar 

Smartphone

Images taken holding a phone or using the phone to take an image through the eyepiece in a telescope.

Winner : Khalid Qureshi – Waning Gibbous Moon

Smartscope

Images taken using systems like the SeeStar, DWARF, or other similar systems. The images can be produced by these systems directly or the data post processed using standard software programs.

Youth Group

Images in any category submitted by members of the Youth Group
