New Observers to Visual Astronomy (N.O.V.A.)

If you are new to astronomy, N.O.V.A. is a terrific opportunity to “learn as you go” from some of the more weathered members of the Calgary Centre.

For the more experienced observers in the Calgary Centre, this is an opportunity to share what you have learned with others, and to help them appreciate our night sky.

These sessions are open to all members and their guests, and are designed to help people develop, or enhance, the skills necessary to truly enjoy observational astronomy. Much of the focus of this group will be towards the various Visual Observing Programs for the first time stargazer created by the National Observing Committee.

After you complete the requirements for each observing program you will earn a certificate and a pin to acknowledge your achievement. You will be developing the observing skills needed to move on to the more challenging observing programs.

Contact us at observing@calgaryrasc.ca if you’re a Member and would like to be added to the NOVA Group list or if you have any questions!

Explore the Universe program is aimed at the novice visual astronomer. The program will stimulate an interest in observational astronomy and techniques for observing the Universe. Click the button above to learn more about the program!

The N.O.V.A mission

The objective of the NOVA Program is to provide information and instruction to new and beginner level amateur astronomers.

All NOVA sessions will be held in-person at the Wilson Coulee Observatory near Okotoks and via Zoom (online). This site offers a number of advantages, including dark skies, a heated clubhouse with classroom, a library and bathroom (not to mention access to the C14). Meetings will be once a month (except during Summer), and will be held on the Friday night before the Observers Group meetings.

Each session will begin with classroom instruction and group discussions, which will allow telescopes to cool outside. There will also be an opportunity for participants to ask questions and to prepare for the evenings observing session. Participants can take advantage of the on site library for reference material including sky atlases, star charts, etc.

Once the classroom activities are complete the group will head outside for observing. This is a great opportunity to get hands-on instruction and guidance, whether you are looking for help in setting up your scope, or trying to learn your way around the sky.

Each participant will also be given a list of items to observe during the time between monthly meetings. This will allow members to practise some of the things that they have learned during each session.

Come on out and join us is this unique opportunity to enhance your knowledge and skills in the ever changing field of amateur astronomy.
