- On-site Registration & sales will run:
Sat Sept 20, 10:30 – 12:00, 13:00 – 14:30, 18:30 – 20:00
- Cover all of your white lights, e.g. flashlights, headlights, interior trailer lights, etc. with red cellophane or the equivalent; or leave them off.
- Although the Star Party officially starts on Friday, for early arrivals, on Wednesday through Friday nights, vehicles will be allowed in (or out) until 23:00 (11:00 PM).
- On subsequent nights, there will be a black-out rule in effect after 21:00 (9:00 PM). Entry or exit shall be done with absolutely no white light – headlights and taillights MUST be covered and the vehicle shall be guided by a pedestrian with a red flashlight. When in doubt, walk!
- Noise (quiet times) – Please refrain from playing loud music, running power generators, or other noisy activities that can disturb attendees from one hour before sunset until 11:00 in the morning. Car alarms that create noise as well as initiate bright flashing lights are particularly disturbing – please be extra-cautious entering your vehicle during these hours, or leave your car alarm off.
- Absolutely no garbage is to be left at your campsite! Clean up after yourselves. Please put garbage in designated receptacles.
- Dogs are to be kept on a leash in and around the observing areas! Many telescope owners do not appreciate dogs ‘visiting’ their equipment.
- No swimming in the pond near the campground (due to leeches)
**Children are welcome at the Alberta Star Party but, parents will be responsible for their child’s conduct and safety at all times. Parents are encouraged to organize events for the children.
NOTE: There is an RV Waste Dump in Milo (see below for distance/location) to dispose of waste.

Lat & Long for mounts & computerized GoTo scopes
Setting up your astrophotography mount or computerized GoTo scopes and wanting to find True North during daylight?
A magnetic compass will point nearly 13 degrees east-of-true-north when at the Stones Throw Campground as shown by the NOAA website (see image).
But, unlike SSSP – True North DOES align with the N-S roads in the area, which is good.
(“M–N” stands for “Direction of Magnetic North)

- Our keynote, Nic David Lecture speaker this year, is Garnet Tozer of RASC Calgary presenting “Digital Imaging and Processing”
Astronomy technology has grown by leaps and bounds over the past years. New varieties of digital imaging telescopes such as the SeeStar and Dwarf product lines have opened up the door for relatively inexpensive imaging.
While the new products are amazing, the images they produce, particularly in light polluted environments can be greatly improved.
Join me in a short tutorial on how to make your images really stand out using open source (free) applications.
