July 26-27 Star-B-Q Photos by Larry McNish

I got back from the Aspen Ranch Star Night late and the sky was not really transparent, so I only got a few shots.

July 28 Rocky Mountain House National Historic Park Star Night Photos by Larry McNish

51 members of the public (including many families with small children) attended the Rocky Mountain House star night. Most took in the theatre talks by Jennifer Howse of the UofC (on the explorer David Thompson) and Roland Dechesne of the RASC. Other members of the public and Parks Canada staff arrived as it got dark. The sky was slightly hazey but beautifully clear all evening and we did not get fogged or "dewed out".

A Bar-B-Q was hosted by the Rocky Mountain House NHS Confluence Society started off the evening. There was solar observing from 6pm to sunset (9:30) with many sunspots visible, and lunar observing of the first quarter moon - lots of craters and mountains visible. We also showcased Saturn and its rings, and after the sky got somewhat darker we were able to show some deep sky objects.

I had my scope, Lou set up one from Banff, Andrew had his big Dobsonian scope and Roland had a pair of large binoculars.

Roland also gave a "sky walk" talk after dark in the parking lot with his laser pointer and I played a couple of movies on my laptop sitting on the back of my truck (mainly aurora, moon and sun videos).

We packed up and left about midnight.

All in all, a great night.

For this unique panorama, Brant took shots all along the Milky Way from the south-west, through the
overhead zenith, to the north-east, then registered and combined them into a sweeping panorama.
